What's New
Ten years ago
On a cold, dark night…

Well, it wasn’t that cold or dark back then, but it has been ten years since The Kathy Kallick Band played their first concert—on May 11, 1996.

The band was formed to tour in support of Kathy’s “Call Me As Taxi” album, but became much more than that in a relatively short time. Their musical and personal chemistry quickly inspired new songs, new arrangements of older songs, and a fresh approach to the music that’s been labelled HOT BLUEGRASS & COOL ORIGINALS.

They released two albums as The Kathy Kallick Band—“Walkin’ In My Shoes” and “Warmer Kind Of Blue”—both of which remained in the National Bluegrass Survey (the charts) for close to a year. In addition, band members participated on two of Kathy’s own releases—“My Mother’s Voice” and “Reason & Rhyme”—during the past decade.

The Kathy Kallick Band has played most of the major bluegrass festivals, including Merlefest, WinterGrass, England’s A1 Festival, and the California Bluegrass Association Festival. They’ve showcased at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s World Of Bluegrass, and played the IBMA Fan Fest. And they’ve twice had seven-country tours in Europe.

Now they’re coming home to the Freight & Salvage for their 10th Anniversary Celebration. They’ll do it with two concerts that promise to be as delightful as they are memorable—and celebratory.

Sat., May 13 (8:00 pm): Freight & Salvage, 1111 Addison St., Berkeley
( 510-548-1761)

Sun., May 14 (1:00 pm): Freight & Salvage, 1111 Addison St., Berkeley
( 510-548-1761) Kathy’s 17th Annual Mother’s Day Celebration with The Kathy Kallick Band playing music for children and families from Kathy’s award-winning albums, “What Do You Dream About?” and “Use A Napkin (Not Your Mom).”

Kathy had a gigantic musical thrill back in January/05, playing and singing with the one and only Mac Martin. Mac has been making great bluegrass music for over 50 years, but has rarely traveled far from his Pittsburgh home. Redwood Bluegrass Associates lured him to California for two shows, partly because he was promised a band of Bay Area bluegrass all-stars: Kathy on bass (!!), Butch Waller (mandolin), and Keith Little (banjo), all of whom helped out with the singing, plus Lisa Berman (dobro) and Paul Shelasky (fiddle). Powerful, thrilling, inspiring music, made under the leadership of a musician who’s now 81. There will be a return of MAC MARTIN & THE CALIFORNIA TRAVELERS (with the same band) for three shows in October/06:
Thur., Oct. 12: Freight & Salvage, Berkeley
Fri., Oct. 13: The Dance Palace, Pt. Reyes
Sat., Oct. 14: Mt. View Presbyterian Church
