What’s New
Based on airplay during June, as reported by 144 DJs to the folk-dj list, songs from the Kathy Kallick Band’s “Between the Hollow & the High-Rise” were broadcast 67 times, which made it the second-most played album on all the folk-ish radio shows. (Some bluegrassers send playlists to this group.) While this is only a fraction of the actual radio shows out there, it’s a significant achievement, especially for an independent record company. Thanks to all for their support!

Where Is My Little Cabin Home?
(Kathy Kallick, Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)

When I left home I never knew
What everybody said would turn out true
I looked homeward but I can’t go back
No old homeplace for me

I’ve been looking real hard with both of my eyes
For a nice little place that’s just the right size
Between the holler and the high-rise
There’s a little cabin home for me
CHORUS:
Oh, where is my little cabin home
A place that I can finally call my own
Unpack all the books and records and the phone
Oh, where is my little cabin home?
Now down by the river would be so sweet
Beneath the shade of a big oak tree
Not too much, but it won’t be free
There’s a little cabin home for me

I’ve got a friend with a cold water shack
Just her and the fiddle and two big cats
Now the landlord doubled the rent on that
Is there a little cabin home for her?
Next to the little cabin home for me
CHORUS
Between the holler and the high-rise there’s
A little cabin home for me

We had two fabulous Bay Area album release celebrations at the Freight & Salvage (Berkeley) and Redwood Bluegrass Associates’ venue (Mountain View) before embarking on a three-week tour of Europe. We performed—in the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Denmark—at the European World Of Bluegrass gathering, the Spring Bluegrass Festival, a Mother’s Day show, a school workshop, and ten additional concerts. There are lots of photos and videos on the Facebook pages of various band members, and we’ll get some here soon.

Thanks so much to all the presenters, all the people who helped us in so many ways, all the friends & fans, old & new, and, especially, to Martino Coppo from the Italian band, Red Wine, who played mandolin and sang with us at every show. (Tom wasn’t able to make the trip, but is back with the KKB at Grass Valley.)

Kathy Kallick Band steps out “Between The Hollow And The High-Rise”
By Travis Tackett
June 9, 2010
BluegrassJournal.com

West Coast Bluegrass artists the Kathy Kallick Band have a brand new project available entitled “Between The Hollow And The High-Rise.”

In the promotional material for the new album, Kallick expands on the meaning of the CDs title. “Many people have come to bluegrass in a round-about way, without growing up with it, without living in rural Kentucky, Tennessee or Virginia. This is the case with me and the members of this band; We were all born in urban environments, not really from the shiny glass and metal of downtown, and not from the piney woods, but somewhere in between.”

After a quick listen, Kallick and Company quickly dispell any ideas that their urban up-bringing might somehow be an obstacle to making music that’s true to the genre’s roots. The Kathy Kallick Band plays hard-drivin’ traditional bluegrass that harkens back to the dirt-floor rural up bringing of those who laid the music’s foundation long ago. And make no mistake they do a great job of it on “Between The Hollow And The High-Rise.”

“Between The Hollow And The High-Rise” features a near 50/50 split of originals penned by Kallick and covers from other songwriters and a couple of instrumentals tunes (“Panhandle Rag” and “Monobrow”) that put the spotlight on Greg Booth’s sizzling Dobro. The opening cut “Where Is My Little Cabin Home,” a Kallick original, sets the tone for the disc, touching on a theme Kallick says “harkens back to a bluegrass ideal that symbolizes, stability, family and a love.”

The instrumental side of the Kathy Kallick Band features a solid group of musicians but for my ears Greg Booth’s dobro really shines on the disc. Booth pushes the flash aside, instead opting for those 1 or 2 notes in a run that take it to a whole new level. I found myself constantly hitting the rewind button.

The Kathy Kallick Band features Tom Bekeny (mandolin, vocals), Dan Booth (acoustic bass, vocals), Greg Booth (dobro, banjo, vocals) Annie Staninec (fiddle, vocals) and of course Kathy Kallick (guitar, vocals).

All in all, “Between The Hollow And The High-Rise,” features a selection of material that should leave most any fan of tradtional bluegrass yearning for more. The album features a great mix of well written, heart felt originals, great arrangements with some subtle twists and turns that are sure to please a mindful ear.
The Kathy Kallick Band’s “Between The Hollow And The High-Rise” is currently available through CountySales.com, CDBaby.com, DigStation.com or you can purchase a copy directly at any Kathy Kallick Band performance.

In March, 2009, Kathy (on acoustic bass & vocals), Paul Shelasky (fiddle), Keith Little (banjo, vocals), Butch Waller (mandolin, vocals), and Lisa Berman (dobro) joined bluegrass pioneer Mac Martin for three concerts. Mike Melnyk came to the RBA show in Mountain View on 3/21, and photographed Mac & the California Travelers at the soundcheck, in concert, and in a makeshift studio. Click here to see what he got.

The new edition of The Kathy Kallick Band played for the first time in February, 2009—at Rancho Nicasio and at the Noe Valley Ministry as part of the San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival. Photographer Mike Melnyk was at the SF show on 2/13, and you can see the results here.
