Reason & Rhyme
(Copper Creek CCCD-0215) “Reason & Rhyme” finds Kathy taking a side road off the bluegrass highway so that she can explore a series of her compositions (plus a few covers) within a contemporary folk setting. The songs have all the familiar hallmarks of Kathy’s music—passion and humor, literate and lyrical storytelling, a depth of exploring and understanding human nature, and a refreshing originality—while incorporating a variety of musical influences. Kathy is, as usual, joined by some of today’s premier acoustic musicians, so the singing and playing are outstanding. These collaborators include guitarists Scott Nygaard and Nina Gerber … longtime musical pal Laurie Lewis (fiddle, bass, vocals) … Good Ol’ Persons associates John Reischman (mandolin) and Sally Van Meter (dobro) … Kathy Kallick Band members Amy Stenberg (vocals) and Brian Wicklund (fiddle) … Bay Area greats Peter Rowan (guitar, vocals), Tom Rozum (mandolin, vocals), and Cindy Browne (bass) … plus Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Todd Phillips (bass), and Herb Pedersen (vocals). Wow! “Reason & Rhyme” is Kathy’s second collection of original compositions. 1993’s “Matters Of the Heart” was a powerful Americana (before such a category had been so named) album, and “Reason & Rhyme” includes some of the same stylistic influences: jazz, rock, folk, country—and bluegrass.
